The good points: Windows 8 is NOT as bad as you were made to think. Don't let that be your deciding factor; you can even make it look like Windows 7. I like the ability to (semi-easily) customize the trackpad, though the fact that the default is backwards confounds me. I LOVE the mute button, though I wish Home, End, Page Up, and Page Down were their own buttons (this is a 17" laptop, for goodness' sake -- I had it on my 15"!).

The bad point: (which bothers me a lot for some reason) There are NO visual indicators for NumLock or CapsLock. It gets cumbersome when you don't notice you've hit 'CapsLock' instead of 'A' five sentences ago.

The good aspects outweigh the bad overall, and this DEFINITELY beats my old laptop that can't charge, so I suggest this one.

Having come full circle from owning Canon Rebel manual 35mm film cameras in the 80's and 35mm automatic cameras in the 90's, then using a relatively good Sony Point and Shoot digital, I have to say the Nikon D60 has reinvigorated my desire to get "the picture" rather than just snap "a picture". I evaluated the Sony, Canon and Nikon models, and in the end the 60 provide the right blend of megapixels, comfort while shooting, available Vibration Reduction lens combinations, and at a price point under $1000 for body and 2 lens, 18-70 VR and 55-200 VR. I have found these VR lens do indeed add an extra level of forgiveness in your shooting.

In last 30 days, we have taken shots of Vegas sites, the Grand Canyon and of many sites along the Nile in Egypt, daylight and night, and the results are very good even for an amateur such as myself.

The Fluke Networks TS44 Pro telephone test set, available with various line cord connectors to suit specific applications, detects dial tone and polarity; places and receives calls; indicates line voltage and low loop current; has a one-way speaker for hands-free listening and a two-way speakerphone for hands-free conversation during testing; tests POTS (plain old telephone service) quality on live DSL lines without disrupting data services; and stores up to ten 23-digit telephone numbers which can be speed-dialed via the keypad. It provides tone or pulse operation. The test set has two basic modes of operation: talk mode for off-hook operations including verifying dialing and receiving calls, and monitor mode for on-hook operations including checking for an idle line, listening for line noise, and measuring DC voltage on the line. In monitor mode, the test set provides high-impedance monitoring of lines without disrupting service. When switching to talk mode, the data lockout feature tests the line for high-speed data signals and remains on hook and beeps if such signals are detected. The lockout can be overridden to pull dial tone from a noise line. This test set passes a 20' (6m) drop test and has a waterproof case that exceeds American Military Specification MIL-STD-810E. The keypad has 12 standard dialing keys including star and pound, and function keys to store, recall, and redial numbers and to pause for accessing a second dial tone when dialing through a PBX (private branch exchange), among other functions. The current LED flashes for 5 seconds to indicate a reading below 23mA and remains solid for normal readings. The test set is made of high-impact plastic. Fluke Networks TS44 Pro Test Set with Abn/pp Review

This is the test set of choices for many RBOCs (Verizon, Qwest, etc.) I found out why, after I bought mine 5 years ago. I put this set through so many abuses, drops, and bumps. It has fallen off of ladders, and hit the pavement. It's also been in severe rain storms, and winter conditions. This set is designed to last, take a beating, and just keep going.

I did however break the clip mount on the top with one particular drop. That's no problem though, since the clip can mount on both sides. It's better used at the bottom anyhow, so you can use the speaker, and dial from your belt.

This set has a two way speakerphone too, which is great, if you need to take some notes, or wait on hold. It also is Data Safe, with filtering, so you can have no worries of interrupting DSL signals. The voltage tester also comes in handy. It has LO/HI indicators. If you see the HI, then it's a good indication of a high cap circuit, or something with a bit of extra voltage going across. The ABN/PP is the best part of the whole deal. If you're not familiar with ABN, it's a bet of nails that penetrate insulation to get into the copper, for test access. When removed, the holes self heal, and no exposure occurs (i.e. doesn't open up the wire for future corrosion issues)

In short, if you want a test set that will work for years to come, get this. I have a Tempo ID'R for my Caller ID testing. They unfortunately don't seem to make them any more, but mine is working fine. If you're worried about caller ID, I'd just recommend getting a separate box for testing.

Yamaha YHT-495BL Complete 5.1-Channel Home Theater System Review

Overall I'm pleased with the YHT-495. The receiver and sub make the cost justified and are nice units however as with most HTIB systems something has to be lacking to achieve the reasonable price and in this case its the speakers. While they do an pretty adequate job the claim of them being 100w thus matching the receiver's max output per channel is false as the box they come in clearly says 80w.
The center channel speaker could be a bit improved perhaps with settings but initially I would say that the front speakers and even surround/rears overpower the voice.
The sub-woofer does put out some nice bass and coupled with the receivers abilities make this a good buy when compared to other systems.
I can see a speaker (at least rear) upgrade in the future but overall this does offer an immersive sound for movie, music and TV in general when 5.1 is offered.

Marantz SR7002 Surround Receiver Review

This is a bit long but I hope reviewers will benefit by my experiences.

Marantz is a name not found at most popular chain type stores, but it is one worth seeking out. I've had Marantz receivers and amplifiers since the 1970s, and that's not because I didn't consider other brands over that time. After research and demoing other brands, I kept coming back to Marantz. I have a Marantz SR7200 surround receiver that has worked flawless since I got it in 2002. But since I recently upgraded to an HD TV, an HD satellite receiver, and a Blu Ray player, I got the itch to upgrade to an HD surround receiver. The SR7200 was working fine, but doesn't have the latest PLIIx, HDMI inputs and outputs, and some of the other high definition sound and video capabilities. So my research began (and I really planned to try another brand this time). I scoured the internet obsessively (as I always do, and did for my TV and Blu Ray player), reading user reviews and professional reviews, and lab tests. I discovered the SR7002 which got very good marks, but another popular brand kept popping up as the recommended choice. It was just under a grand, so I bit the bullet and purchased the receiver. It had all of the latest bells and whistles and was a very good receiver. But for me, the warmth of the Marantz sound and the user friendly set up and menus was just not there. After a few days of use and adjusting, I returned the receiver, spent an extra $130, and walked out with the Marantz SR7002. Very wise choice for me. The SR7002 has a few less bells and whistles of the previous brand I tried, but it certainly has all of what most folks will need. It has plenty of power for my mid to large living room. The set up and menus are straight forward and very user friendly. Just as a test, I compared the quality of video I get when I run the HDMI video signal from my satellite receiver and Blu Ray player direct to the TV, and when I run the HDMI video signal through the SR7002 first, then to the TV. I cannot tell the difference. There is no loss of video quality running through the receiver first. The beauty of that is less cables to use and easier use of switching between functions. And the sound - excellent. For me, there is a warmth and fullness to the Marantz sound that I don't hear with other receivers. I've read the manual a bit more thoroughly now and have tweaked the system slightly the last few weeks and am even more satisfied. The automatic speaker "calibration" system is very simple to use and balances the speakers wonderfully. It calculates the distances each speaker is away from various sitting positions, adjusts volumes, etc. After that I did go in and made some very minor volume adjustments to suit my taste, particularly the sub and the crossover setting to the sub - everyone's speakers and tastes are different. But it's a great way to establish a solid balanced base to make personal adjustments from. The remote is fine too. It is a learning remote, and I've been able to program it to control my satellite receiver, my Blu Ray player, a DVD recorder, a VHS machine, and my TV. Very nice. I will say that I have since gotten a Harmony One universal remote that, after some experience and program tweaking with it, is excellent, and that is what I use. But I still keep the Marantz remote nearby just in case. I really could have gotten by with the Marantz remote just fine and would have been happy, but the Harmony One has other advanced qualities that are quite nice (but that's another review). So after a ton of research and a try out of a recommended brand, Marantz came through again. I'm totally satisfied. The receiver is the heart of any system; so you need to review, research, and try out for yourself; but in my experiences over the years, Marantz has always been a high quality product, and the SR7002 doesn't disappoint. If you want power and high quality sound, in a user friendly system, for just over a grand, this is it.
