Datacolor DC S3SSR100 Spyder 3 Studio SR Review

I have gotten serious about my photography, along with about 10 million other people, but I stray. I thought I was doing pretty well in the image printing arena, since I could print images for my clients which matched what I was seeing on my monitor (with the exception of black and whites, see below). Anyway, I found out quickly I was in trouble when I sent my work to a professional lab for some special prints. My images were way too dark and too red. At first I didn't think it was my problem, but once I got my system fully calibrated and I was reproducing the prints the professional lab produced with my files, I knew my system had been the problem.

With respect to black and white images, I had always been frustrated with the lack of agreement between my printer and my monitor. I could never get my prints to have the same detail and range as my images in photoshop.

So, I decided to bite the bullet and purchase a calibration system. I did my homework. I did an internet search for the best color calibration systems and the Spyder 3 Studio SR stood out, both in quality of results and support. I also did some reading to confirm, yes I really do need BOTH the monitor and printer calibration systems.

The system appears to be well made. The software installed quite easily. There was an update available when I registered both the monitor and printer units. I chose to download and install both updates. In order to use the updates you need a key, which is sent to you via email. Both of mine arrived within 5 minutes after sending the key request.

My first attempt at calibrating my system failed. I wasn't getting a good match. I contacted support and got a response withing 24 hours. I sent the requested information back to them, (this was on a Friday). I decided to try again, taking my time as I went along to get everything perfect. I calibrated my monitors, I have two. And yes, you can calibrate two monitors in XP as long as the hardware on the video card supports it. I have a BFG GeForce graphics card, works great. Just follow the instructions on the screen. When I went to calibrate my printer, I used the expert four page calibration. Takes a little extra time, but if you are serious about your color, it's worth it. Make sure you watch the squares you are reading with the calibration tool on your monitor. If you have a odd read, repeat it. Odd meaning, a light colored square when the shading is getting darker on your printed sheet, ie mismatch. And vise versa.

I am stoked about the results. My images look like they do on my monitor, even my black and whites. I did find, in addition to using the new printer profile I created when printing through my printer, I get the best results if I use the same profile to create a "soft proof" in CS5.

By the way, support contacted me Monday after having gone through the items I sent to them, including my original printer profile. They had noted some abnormalities in the profile I had sent them and had some suggestions. Of course, recalibrating had fixed my problems and I let them know I was a happy camper. But I will say, I am impressed by how quickly they responded and with how detailed they were. I have no concerns about contacting support in the future considering my experiences so far.

Philips 46IN 60HZ 1080P LCD Pixel Plus HD Pc-in 3-HDMI Review

I was skeptical about this TV since it's not an LED model, just a standard lamp-lit LCD. However, it's 1080p is crystal clear, brilliant, and incredibly bright. The TV itself is pretty thin, and not too heavy. I was frustrated with how dark it was, until I changed the "Eco" setting. With "eco" on, the TV adjusts its brightness to ambient light, but even if you go into brightness settings, you can't increase the max lamp brightness. You must turn this mode off, and only then will the lamps light up like they should. Now it's crisp, clear, bright, and even the audio sounds better!

In addition, this has a USB port for playing MP3 files, and photo slideshows. However, the interface for the music player is downright archaic and borderline unusable. Having to load MP3s and photos on a flash drive and use the interface provided to play the music on the USB port is a flat-out joke. You're better off grabbing an Apple TV or something to stream your music wirelessly to this TV.

Pros:

-- Easy to set up
-- Remote is good and simple
-- Excellent picture quality
-- 3 HDMI ports

Cons:
-- Only 1 component and composite video input
-- "Eco" mode on by default. Need to turn this off to get desired brightness.
-- Audio quality of built-in speakers is kinda muddy. (A non-issue if you have your own separate speaker system.)
-- Power cable WAY too short. (but I had an identical one on a different device in the house which was much longer, which worked. It's a standard power cable.)
-- USB port music player and photo slideshow feature is functional but archaic, ugly, and difficult to use.

Vizio E370VL 37 LCD 1080P Review

Just got this last week. Could not be happier with my purchase. This is a really good product, and unbeatable for the price.

Big Pros:
1. Great picture quality and accurate color, even with non-HD sources. No issues with jitter or artifacting, even during high-speed motion scenes.
2. Super simple menus and controls. Everything is well-designed and placed exactly where you'd expect to find it. You can even name the various inputs so you don't have to remember which port your devices are plugged into.
3. Decent sound, for an LCD (Note to the other reviewers who criticized the sound: Come on! If you're that passionate about audio fidelity, get a stereo. There's no LCD on the market that produces deep, rich audio... there just isn't enough room in the box to put large speakers.)
4. LOTS of options for adjusting color, contrast, picture size/position and audio (but the factory settings work just fine for me).
5. Uses less that 75 watts of energy when powered on, and less that 1 watt when off!

Minor Cons:
1. Very mediocre styling (looks like the tv and remote were designed in 1990).
2. The back-lit Vizio logo stays on even when the TV is off. (Come on, Vizio!)
3. Power button is hard to get to.
4. No side-mounted HDMI port.
5. The base could be sturdier (just a little too much wobble for my comfort). Also wish it had a swivel base.
6. The high-gloss finish on the plastic bezel is way too delicate. Managed to scratch it just wiping clean with windex and a paper towel.
7. The "quick start" instruction sheet is made for several different models, and most of it DOESN'T apply to this model.

Audio tip:
Though I believe the "TruVolume" setting is supposed to REDUCE problems with volume jumping between commercials and shows (and volume difference between channels), I found the sound was much better with this option turned OFF. Go to Menu -> Audio -> Advanced Audio to change.

Tips for AT&T UVerse users:
- Use remote code "1343" to program your UVerse remote, not the codes provided by Vizio or ATT.
- To ensure you're sending the highest resolution signal to your tv, go to Menu -> Options -> System Options -> Aspect Ratio, and change to 1080i.

This is an incredible camera for the price. We were completely satisfied with our purchase and did not have one moment of regret. We are still discovering "cool" features it offers. Only one small critique and that is that the bag that comes with the camera is too small to be truly functional. We simply swapped out the one that came (with one we had already) to allow us to carry the battery recharger and filters etc. Although it won't satisfy the person looking for a teeny, tiny camera, in every other way this is without any hesitation an excellent purchase.
