I originally purchased the model without the quick release. I found that it was a pain for me to screw the camera on the tripod so I returned that head and purchase this one with the QR. I really like this head.The QR mechanism is very easy to use and adjust. You first open the clamp and then slide the camera (with QR plate) into the head. You then close the clamp. The clamp has a screw to easily adjust the plate tension. This works very well.
When you release the clamp, the QR plate cannot accidentally slide out because of a safety mechanism. You just have to press a slide button to release the plate. This instills confidence that the camera won't accidentally fall out when being removed.
The tension on the ball head can be adjusted to get just the tension you want. The knob is large and easy to use with only a small turn needed. There is also a small fine adjustment which you would infrequently use to adjust the fineness of the tension adjuster. The tension can lock the camera or be left so you can easily move the camera and yet not have it flop down when you let go of the camera.
The head has a drop down notch that allows you take pictures in portrait position. Some people get an L QR plate for this but I infrequently do this so the drop notch is fine for me.
If you have long lenses with their own tripod mount you would also need to get a QR plate for them (the plates are relatively inexpensive and come in a variety of sizes).
QR mounts are somewhat propriety to each head so you would want to get them from the same manufacturer.
I have used this with up to a 200mm lens + 2x extender (400mm effective focal length) and it is rock steady (with no creep) and easy to use.
It comes with a few built-in easy to use spirit levels which are very useful to level the head including in portrait mode.
