I decided to purchase a soundbar to compare its set up vs. the traditional 7.1 (separate speakers per channel) and the Bose lifestyle option. Since I have all three home theater arrangements in different rooms, I can easily discern the pros and cons of the soundbar option. Others have already provided the technical specs so I will go straight to the pros and cons of purchasing a soundbar.

PROS -
1. The Yamaha 4100 is among the best soundbars available. The available DSP options, ease of set up, features, etc is the best for the money.
2. The sound quality is simply amazing....but I highly recommend you add a subwoofer (any reputable brand in addition to Yamaha) will suffice. Since the soundbar comes with a wireless adapter, you can marry the unit with any subwoofer and place it anywhere in the room. The DSP options for movies, music, sporting events, etc are preset for your listening pleasure. No other manufacturer can top Yamaha's technology.
3. Your spouse will appreciate not having a bunch of wires/cable displacement and a cluster of 7 or 8 speakers to simulate surround sound.

CONS-
1. It's a tall unit- about 6 ins tall which makes it problematic to put in front of a TV without blocking the screen and/or TV infrared red eye.
2. Yamaha Customer Service blows. I startied having trouble with the subwoofer wireless adapter and contacted customer service. Be prepared to be on hold for 20 mins per call, talk to half a dozen tier 1 reps, more hold time and then if you are lucky, you may get a tier 2 rep who may not solve your technical issues
3. An amazing soundbar will not replace the varied directional frequency from 7 to 10 discrete speakers. You will give up some of quality in exchange for convenience.
