ATN Night Spirit-2 Gen 2+ Night Vision Multi Purpose System Review

This is my 2nd Gen II+ NV scope. It comes with a 3x lens and I paid $999.00 for mine. You can buy a picatinny adapter and 1x lens combo from ATN or some vendors (make sure you get the combo and not just the adapter for that price from vendors) for use with optics on rifles.

I found this scope to be better than my Night Optics Gen II+ D-300M-2ST I had purchased some months previous for $1500.00 that comes with a 1x lens. The price of the ATN with the mount 2 lenses was more than $300 less than the Night Optics scope and additional picatinny rail mount with just 1 lens.

On both models, there is an IR emitter that is fine for casual viewing of things a very short distances (maybe 20 yards, max) and that don't work well when mounted on a rifle.

As a value for function, I would give the ATN 5 stars. The fit of the components to the heavy duty polymer housing wasn't perfect, but does not appear to negatively affect the function of the scope in any way. If I need another comparable scope, I would buy another ATN Night Spirit.

FYI, a buddy purchased a similar Gen III version from ATN and paid close to $3000 for his scope. Gen III scopes should provide better resolution and better light amplification, but for the difference in cost, I could not see there being any significant difference out to about 30 yards inside the barn where we tested them side by side. His scope is slightly smaller, but not significantly.

Both the Night Optics and ATN Night Spirit were purchased for use on rifles for the purpose of hog eradication. In speaking with reps from both companies, each was said to be OK for use with rifle calibers up to .308, but not with .45-70 or with 12 ga. shotguns.

UPDATE: Last year the lens head of the unit fell off. It seems that the lens screws into place on a threaded ring. The threaded ring fits into the housing via fiction. The housing is plastic. As such, its grip on the friction ring is tenuous over time. I am quite disappointed.

Product Feature

• Advanced Leveling System with 2 spirit levels
• Large Bubble sphere for smooth movement and accurate locking
• Large locking knob with friction control
• Separate Panoramic lock
• Redesigned quick release system

Product Description

Designed for maximum locking torque this head eliminates micro movements and cuts vibration for sharper images. Gitzo has now developed a new exclusive technology that enables us to produce high quality, completely round hollow spheres, with a ultra thin wall, for an incredible weight reduction. Our magnesium center ball heads are renowned for their smooth and precise movements and high quality manufacturing. PTFE is applied to the ball and blocking pads to eliminate all traces of jarring and skipping. The result is highly accurate positioning adjustments, even with long tele lenses. This head will support up to 45LBS.

Gitzo GH3780QR Series 3 Magnesium Center Ball Head QR (Gray) Review

I originally purchased the model without the quick release. I found that it was a pain for me to screw the camera on the tripod so I returned that head and purchase this one with the QR. I really like this head.

The QR mechanism is very easy to use and adjust. You first open the clamp and then slide the camera (with QR plate) into the head. You then close the clamp. The clamp has a screw to easily adjust the plate tension. This works very well.

When you release the clamp, the QR plate cannot accidentally slide out because of a safety mechanism. You just have to press a slide button to release the plate. This instills confidence that the camera won't accidentally fall out when being removed.

The tension on the ball head can be adjusted to get just the tension you want. The knob is large and easy to use with only a small turn needed. There is also a small fine adjustment which you would infrequently use to adjust the fineness of the tension adjuster. The tension can lock the camera or be left so you can easily move the camera and yet not have it flop down when you let go of the camera.

The head has a drop down notch that allows you take pictures in portrait position. Some people get an L QR plate for this but I infrequently do this so the drop notch is fine for me.

If you have long lenses with their own tripod mount you would also need to get a QR plate for them (the plates are relatively inexpensive and come in a variety of sizes).

QR mounts are somewhat propriety to each head so you would want to get them from the same manufacturer.

I have used this with up to a 200mm lens + 2x extender (400mm effective focal length) and it is rock steady (with no creep) and easy to use.

It comes with a few built-in easy to use spirit levels which are very useful to level the head including in portrait mode.

Mirage OS3-FS Omnipolar Tower Floorstanding Speaker (High Gloss Black) Review

These speakers are great. However if you are after the best sound for your your money then you have less expensive options.
Don't get me wrong they sound great but my Polk Monitor 70s that they replaced sounded just as good for half the price and with better lows.
I bought these because my previous speakers were big, bulky, and didn't go with the wall mounted flat LED TV.
These speakers have a very crisp highs and smooth mids but severely lacking any lows. You will need a good sub to complete a good sound for your system.
They are well crafted, sleek and beautiful.
They come with rubber or spiked feet for your floor on carpet. The glass base is great and give the slender speaker a great "tip-over free" platform.
They look sexy with or without the magnetic mesh grill installed.
For the price there is no better looking pair of speakers with this great quality of sound.

Sony 8 GB Walkman Video MP3 Player (Black) Review

I won't even compare it with any other mp3 player as this is a class on its own.
I just got it 4 hrs ago from sonystyle shop and am playing with this for a couple of hrs now.
I've had tons of mp3 players in past. Actually i have 3 ipods at this time (shuffle(1GB), nano(8GB) and ipod (20GB) and except shuffle other 2 are going to go to for sale today. Personally i can say with 100% confidence that ipods sound quality is at the rock bottom. Shuffle 1st gen is good though.
Ok now about this player, sound quality is beyond comparison (you need to hear it to believe). player itself is smaller in size than 2 gen ipod nano and is all brushed metal body so no chance of scratching. screen is absolutely gorgeous and vibrant with more than 260k colors.
player is extemely responsive and there is no lag in anything.
Drag and drop is the best you can ask for. it plays mp3 and wma files with no issues.
Connection port is also covered with inbuilt cover that automatically engages once usb cable is disconnected.
supplied earphones is of extremely high quality (though not as good as my shure e2c).
Overall i am absolutely convinced that Sony is the only company that knows how to reproduce excellent sound quality.
Also this player doesn't seems to need any kind of enclosure as it is really durable.
I'll update once is use this over the weekend.
Okey here is the update!!!
I've been using this player for a week now and i'm extemely satisfied with the performance, sound is the best i've ever heard from a mp3 player and there are lots of useful sound settings...
i've transfered a lot of video songs to the player by converting them to AVC format using nero 7 and it playes with absolutely stunning details and as i said earlier "no lag" the player is very responsive (i think sony used some very fast processor in there).
earphones that sony bundled with player is extemely good and very very comfortable.
I converted some movies to play on this player using nero 7 into AVC format and a single 2 hr movie is about 500 mb (at highest settings) which is great as i can have about 4 movies in addition to about 6 gigs of music on the player.
I have uploaded some pictures that i took comparing this player with various ipod models which might be useful for potential buyers.

Important Update:

Based on several other reviewers comments and a couple of emails i have received it seems that several users are having trouble playing and/or transferring videos onto the player. So for the benefit of everyone i'd try to explain the process.
For playing videos there are 3 important aspects
1. This player can only play videos in MP4 format (sony's "memory stick" video format) which has 2 varieties MPEG4 and AVC. Max bitrate for MPEG4 supported is 2.5 MBPS and for AVC 750 KBPS.
2. The player can only play video with maximum video size of 320x240, anything larger than this size will not be played.
3. Videos needs to be copied in video folder on player.
I find Nero Recode 2 (included with NERO 7 Ultra) to be an ideal SW for converting videos into MP4 format as it gives options for manipulating video size and audio range and also extracting parts of videos.
I use the following settings for video conversion
AVC format (portable) with 320x240 video size and 500 KBPS bitrate and i use very high audio settings (to keep audio low on player).
I hope this information helps users. Feel free to seek more help.
