Yamaha RX-V871BL Network AV Receiver Review
Yamaha has always produced a receiver that stood out amongst the crowd for transparency; sounds that were in the background of other receiver were brought to the forefront. Instruments muffled or should I say more muted that reside in the mid-range spectrum are brought forth with more clarity. The leading consumer reporting magazine gave the predecessor Yamaha RXV-663 their top award. Then along came the re-engineered 665 and if you read the reviews here that was a black sheep. Now they are back with the 671 garnering lots of 5 star reviews, and only a few 4 stars. Yamaha did it again. The only problem is that the 665 had in addition to amplified sound a separate pre-amp section, and they also had two sub-woofer outs. (More about why that is so critical soon)RXV-671BL: Yamahas latest entry in the 600 series is the 671 and that lost the separate pre's and dual subwoofer outputs but picked up Ethernet connectivity; a whole new ball game. Streaming online updates, and enjoying not only all of the free streaming music services (I subscribe inexpensively to Pandora which allows me to use the high fidelity audio downloads instead) but you can also access right through the receiver any audio collection in any machine in your home network including Windows Media Center. That's a big Wow. The only drawback on the 671 is that in order to do that and maintain the price point they took out the separate pre-amp out option, and only offer a single subwoofer output also no dual HDMI's, and more.
RX-V871BL: So now let's get onto the best of both worlds. The newly released Yamaha RX-V871 7.2 channel network A/V receiver, the new flagship, top model of its RX-V line. For only a few hundred dollars more you get all of the internet connectivity, a higher output amplifier section, and a completely separate pre-amp section and dual subwoofer outputs PLUS dual HDMI outs which is great so you can watch on your high def monitor, or high def TV or both. (If you haven't experienced your computer using your big screen TV as a monitor, try plugging it in; you're in for a big surprise.)
I have been an audiophile for a long time. To the real purist distortion ratings in the .05% range is where true high end stereo is. (Amazon specs are a typo on these, they are not .06%) These surround sound receivers are great for listening to movies through small speakers but they are rated at .09% THD on Yamaha dot com site. On the other hand the pre-amp outs on the Yamaha 871 are rated more like in the .001 range. Pre-amps are not under heavy demand like an amp is so they produce pristine specs.
AUDIOPHILE GRADE LOW DISTORTION RATINGS- HOW TO GET THEM; So how to build an audiophile grade, high end system cheap is to do the following. Get the Yamaha 871 flagship model now; it's only a few hundred more. Even if you buy it now and finish your complete system later, the 871 is the heart of your system. Now in order to compete with the big boys you now have sweet pre-amps and can get a pure 2 channel stereo signal output. Yamaha has created two options you will find interesting. One is they can take a surround signal and by choosing this option they can convert it to 2 channel stereo, or take a 2 channel stereo signal and play it through the 2 front speakers or more. This is where the audiophile option comes in.
Pick up an old world used high end amp that can be had for cheap. I love the Adcom's MKII's. They put out a whopping 300 watts RMS at only .05% distortion. You can buy them on eBay used for only a couple of hundred dollars or less. I bought 3 of them used from someone who had them in a twelve thousand dollar system and I only paid 50 cents per watt. So 300 watts turned into only $150. One of them was the Adcom MK11 600 watt with 300 watts per side for only $300. The cost of that amp alone was originally many times the price of this receiver. We are talking audiophile top drawer sound. There are a lot of old world high end amps available: the old Crown or Epicures with tubes can be had for a song today. My Adcoms are over 20 years old and still work perfectly; they are built like the rock of Gibraltar.
So now you are blending superb 2-channel stereo quality (something the purist's only listen to, scoffing at the over processed lower spec surround sound) with the superb pre-amp quality isolated in the separate pre-amps of the 871. Just blow up the back panel photos here on Amazon of the 671 compared to the 871 to see what I mean. So you can enjoy great movies and effects with surround sound, but with the 871 you also get the pre's and the option of achieving audiophile grade quality, true, superbly clean 2-channel stereo.
TWO SUBWOOFER OUTS; Sharing the stage of importance in high quality sound are your subwoofers. Now onto why do you need two subwoofer outs? Because with subs in high end audio circles they call single sub use as problematic due to "Nulls" in the room. You would think the bass would be all permeating because bass waves carry over distance. It is not because they don't carry, but rather because they reflect and cancel each other out. By the time the reflected signal hits your ears, and the original signal, they are then out of phase, and out of phase signals cancel each other. Just walk around the room in different spots and listen to your current setup.
So by having two subs you get a much better dispersion of sound, and sweet-spots emerge everywhere. Some high end systems in much larger rooms even have 3 subs or more but we won't get into that. So why is this sub setup so inexpensive? You don't have to add a second sub right away, but somewhere down the road you may want to seriously consider it, and with the 871 you are ready.
FOUR BIG ADVANTAGES OF THE 871 OVER THE 671
CLEANER OUTPUT. The 871 is rated at the same distortion specs on surround sound as the 671 but at a higher wattage output. So at the same listening levels, the 871 is cleaner.
TWO HDMI OUTPUT's. Enjoy your video experience through your high def computer monitor, TV, or both.
PRE-AMP OUTS. Pristine true audio quality is possible with the 871's separate pre's giving you a true component stereo option.
DUAL SUBWOOFER OUTPUTS: Enjoy that truly impressive deep rich full bass sound more completely throughout the room. No nulls that cancel out the fullness of the sound which is great when friends stop over.
If I had to get critical of these Yamaha receivers I would like to have all functions work through the receiver, but I can live with those that are controlled they are superbly convenient. Overall it is the best for less. Even if you don't want to do all of this right now, start with the flagship of Yamahas RX series the 871 now, and then the other options can come when a little extra cash will allow. It's my receiver of choice. I'm really happy with it. I got a good price through MillCrafters/Amazon under more buying choices used/new. So I bought the 871 which is twice the receiver than the 671 for almost the same price as the 671. I have one in the bedroom and living room. Highly recommended.
