I purchased one of these PCs without the monitor for a Home Theater PC.

I've been using a slimline Gateway for a HTPC for years, but it really hits a wall when it comes to expandability.

This Dell comes with a 1TB hard drive, and has room for another right next to it. It has a total of two 3.5" hard drive bays, two 5.25" optical drive bays, and one 3.5" floppy drive bay. The floppy drive bay is occupied by the front usb ports/media card reader, however, an extra hard drive could easily be added in addition to those. There are 4 SATA (revision 2.0) ports on the motherboard for adding drives, and 4 SATA power connectors to match.

The LGA 1155 socket used for the processor is a strong point for upgrades. Not only does it fit the current Intel i7-2700k (3.5 GHz quad core) processor, but it will also be compatible with the upcoming Intel Ivy Bridge series processors.

Unfortunately, there is no built in support for either USB 3.0, or SATA revision 3.0. However, these can be added via one of the two available PCI-Express x 1 slots (3 slots total, one is occupied by the wireless adapter. There is also one PCI-Express x 16 slot available to add a graphics card.

The wireless adapter works better than any other I've used. Most wireless adapters seem to freeze up, or drop the connection frequently, but this one has worked flawlessly so far.

The processor in this thing is great. It speeds through whatever you throw at it. Blu Ray encoding (which is usually an overnight task) happens in 2-4 hours (depending on length and quality). It never gets bogged down.

On mine, I've added a 2nd hard drive (2TB), replaced the DVD drive with a Samsung Blu Ray drive (for ripping Blu Rays), and added a Samsung 830 series SSD (in the second optical drive bay). I also added a AMD Radeon HD 6670 graphics card and a SATA 3.0 controller card.

Mine now gets an overall score of 7.1 on the Windows Experience Index (limited by the graphics). I believe it had a 5.9 when I got it, which was limited by the original hard drive (Seagate 7200 RPM 1 TB drive).

The one hiccup I ran into with this PC was adding a drive to the second optical drive bay. There is a special screw/peg that is used on the right side of the original DVD drive to hold that side of the drive in place. This screw/peg is needed to add additional drives to the second optical drive bay, or the floppy drive bay. I contacted Dell support to get a couple of these, and they only offer them as part of upgrade packages. They could have been nice, and just sent me a couple, or even charged me $10 for them, but instead, they flat out refused unless I bought an upgrade package, including a drive. I managed to use a screw I found in place of it, but it was a little irritating.

Also, if you have any intention of adding a floppy drive... the bay is there, but it's obviously not intended to be used. You'll have to modify the PCs front plastic panel to remove the USB ports/card reader, and then you'll be able to put your floppy drive in. The finished product should look fine (has a door that covers it and should be able to be left intact), but you'll have to cut a little plastic.
