Weaver Super Slam Matte Scope (1-5 x 24 Dangerous Game with Heavy Dual-X Reticle and 30mm Tube) Review

First let me say that I am by no means a rifle or scope expert. However I do own several rifles for target shooting and hunting and I have purchased and sold probably 10-12 scopes in the last year looking for the right one.
This scope is one of the best values out there for the medium range hunter and shorter range target shooter. I mounted this on a Remington 7615p .223. It is a perfect match.
First about the scope. It is a true 1-5x power scope. Many claim 1 power but are really 1.25 -1.4. Yes it is true binocular, you can shoot with both eyes open to track game or a moving target. I have a 3x and a 4x scope and this is slightly more powerful. The glass seems very clear at least as good as my Steiner binoculars. I have a Weaver 1-3x20 V series and this one is better in light transmission, low power field of view, and high power. It should be for a scope that has an MSRP of twice the price. That is where this gets a little crazy. Amazon has this scope for the price of everyone else. Add to that the fact that Weaver has a $50 cash rebate on all Super Slam scopes until 12/2011 and that brings the price down to $180. That makes this scope an unbelievable deal.

The only negatives with this scope are its size and weight. It is an inch longer than my other Weaver but that worked in my favor as it was easier to mount with good eye relief. The weight, well that is a trade off for a scope that is built like a tank. This scope is designed to sit on rifles destined for the African continent and that means huge recoil. It better be built tough. I'll take that trade off for a scope of this quality that will probably last a lifetime even if I knock it around in the north woods.
I do want to mention the one part of this scope that appears to not match the manufacturer's specification. The scope I received has the regular duplex reticle NOT the Heavy Duplex reticle. I compared it side by side with my V series 1-3X20 Weaver and they are identical. For what it is worth I much prefer the Duplex reticle and was prepared to send it back if I couldn't stand the Heavy one. Imagine my surprise when I found it was the regular one. The only thing I can figure is that maybe Weaver made some with the wrong reticle and is letting Amazon clear these scopes out for a cheap price.
I was so pleased that I ordered a second scope and plan to put it on my Marlin 336ss. I think that will be another perfect match. For a couple of guns that will be used primarily in the woods for shots less than 100 yards the low power will be a huge asset. For the occasional time when I need to make a longer shot or for tuning up at the range 100yd target the 5x will be more than enough.
