Yamaha RX-A810BL 7.2-Channel Network AV Receiver (OLD VERSION) Review

This is a well built, solid receiver that sounds great with both music and movies. In fact, it performs much better than the Denon (purchased before this and returned) especially with surround effects, channel seperation and even bass.

I also have the "front height" speakers connected, or as Yamaha calls it, "Presence" speakers. I would definitely recommend anyone that buys this receiver to connect the front height channels. This will allow you to take advantage of a great feature called "Dialogue Lift". What this does is output some of the dialogue through the front height speakers, in essence lifting the dialogue to make it come out of the TV as opposed to the center channel. Of course this feature is only useful if your center channel is located below your TV, which is usually the case. Besides "Dialogue Lift" the front height channels will also allow you to take full advantage of the "Yamaha Cinema DSP 3D" sound programs. You can select a sound program suitable to the content (movies, music, sports, games etc)and the receiver will output certain sounds from the front height channels to give you a wide, high and dense sound field. This is similar to the Dolby ProLogic IIz(not available on this receiver) but a lot better. I thought Dolby's version was more of a gimmick than anything else. If you don't connect the front height channels, the receiver will actually create "virtual" front height/presence speakers for you.

I also think Yamaha has done a really good job with the graphical user interface. It is way better than Denon's. I'm not sure what other manufacturers have but Yamaha's is very clear, intuitive and easy to navigate.

Although the Apple certified USB port up front is common, its really convenient to also be able to view all your music and video files on your iPod/iPhone on screen. Please note that video output from your iPhone/iPod would require a separate cable going into the video aux jack. It would be nice to be able to pass video through the USB but unfortunately it only does audio. Although music played through the USB port does sound really good. I had no idea a home theater system could sound this good with music. In fact, music is where those Cinema DSP 3D modes really shine, especially with rock. For example, I had some Def Leppard playing with the Cinema DSP set to "The Roxy Theater". So on this setting the receiver will play the song giving you the sensation that you are at the Roxy Theater which is a rock music live house in LA. Yamaha actually went to this theater and set up a whole bunch of mics to accurately capture the sound stage. They did this for all the Cinema DSP music modes.

Movies sound just as good with clear, natural dialogue and deep tight bass. In fact, the receiver also gives you the option of "Extra Bass". What this does is output low frequency signals, meant for the front left/right channels, through both the subwoofer as well as the front left/right. This is in addition to the low frequency signals already being sent to your subwoofer. Thus giving a little extra oomph to your movies and music. The Cinema DSP 3D modes for movies are not as effective as the the ones for music but still much better than Dolby ProLogic IIz.

Lastly, the receiver comes with a 3 year warranty from Yamaha, which is hard to find with other manufacturers.

I've owned this receiver for about a month and have no cons to report yet, but i will update this review in the future as needed.

In conclusion, i think this is a great receiver that performs exceptionally well with anything that you throw at it.

UPDATE:
I have now owned this receiver for a little over 3 months and about 2 months ago i managed to get this receiver connected to the internet. Since hard wiring was out of the question, i had to look around for another solution which i found in the form of a media-bridge, DLINK DAP-1555 to be specific. So i have had this receiver connected to the internet for a while now and would strongly urge anyone that owns this receiver to do the same. There are a couple of very good reasons to do so:

1) Firmware Updates. I've already done a firmware update via the internet and its way more convenient than using a USB drive. Not only that but when Yamaha rolls out firmware updates, they go out through the internet FIRST. Then, after a few weeks, they are uploaded on their website for people to download. So having the receiver online simply puts you ahead of the line.

2) Yamaha iPhone app. The Yamaha app works great. You can not only control the receiver's basic functions through it but you can also see track information and play, pause, skip tracks in Pandora, Rhapsody and other music services right out of your iPhone. In addition, you can even use the iPhone keyboard to search for songs, albums, artists etc. on Pandora, Rhapsody and the rest, which beats using the onscreen keyboard and having to select each letter separately. Also, Yamaha now has this new feature called "Music Play". This is basically Yamaha's version of Airplay. This feature allows you to access songs stored on your iOS device and wirelessly play them through the receiver. Unlike Airplay though, you will not be able to stream iTunes through your computer.

There are other network functions this receiver can perform, but i find the above mentioned most useful.
