We bought this unit in June 2012 to replace our X85 by Lowrance that stopped working after MANY years of use. The Lowrance Elite 5 Fishfinder/Chartplotter was OK, but nothing like the X85, for finding the fish and bottom, but only after alot of fine tuning. Now two months after the 1 year warranty has expired the unit took a crap, and will not find the bottom, fish, brush, etc. So we called Lowrance and were told that we could send it to them and they would check it out. If they test it and it fails they will send us a new unit for only $349 plus shipping and no choice if we just want them to send the bad unit back, we have to get a new one. If they check it and it doesn't fail we pay $49 plus a "Bench" fee, plus shipping, and get the unit, that does not work, back.
And, if you have read the box, it says you get a "5 Year Lowrance Advantage Service" .... What a JOKE!!! It is nothing more than tech support and if you decide you want to upgrade your unit, it won't cost you but $400+ to get the upgrade. Hummmmm .... why not tell the customer, when your warranty is out, you are screwed, and it's time to buy a new one.
I had a problem with the amplifier in my X85, sent it in, they fixed it and it cost me $85. When I asked them couldn't they just fix the Elite 5 I have now, the reply I got was "We don't fix them and send them back anymore, we replace them".
Well I for one will not have the Elite 5 replaced, we will be purchasing a new one that is made by someone other the Lowrance, because we have now purchased our last one from them, because paying $400+ every year is a bunch of BS!!
